8/6/10 – poem, dazzling orquidea

Another first line “found” poem. This was a username in a chatroom – often bots names will be computer generated connecting an adjective with a noun, random, often old or oblique, sometimes nonsense. I assumed the second word was nonsense, albeit beautiful. I googled it – it is Spanish for orchid (which a lot of you could probably have told me).

I spent two summers in college alphabetizing 17th century Spanish, by hand, words and quotes on 3×5 cards. Really. I don’t know Spanish, though, just rudimentary. I attempted one of my little stream of conscious gems. Sometimes they dazzle, sometimes they don’t. As an exercise, I made the Spanish translation by running the poem through Google Translation, working on a few words and lines, feeling it out a bit.

Dazzling orquidea
your petals your edges
sharp
sharp as color
empty as life
sharp as death
empty fulfilling
bloomed unto space

Deslumbrante orchid
tus pétalos sus bordes
afilado
afilado como el color
vacia como la vida
afilado como la muerte
vacío completa
florecen en el espacio

But the English version itself was kinda spellbinding… I’ve never looked at an Orchid that way…but th poem reminded me of this Orchid garden in Singapore…it was BEAUTIFUL! The variety…phew!
Will look at the flower a lil more closely the next time.. 🙂
